Where Globe-Trotting meets Beach-Combing

August 7, 2009 Port of Call

South by Southeast Asia

“The islet you are about to cross is 136 km north of the Equator and is described as the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia. This islet is linked to Asia via a suspension bridge to Sentosa island which is linked to mainland Singapore by a 710 meter long causeway bridge. Singapore is further linked to Peninsular Malaysia and Asia by the Singapore-Johore Causeway. Please enjoy your stay at the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia.”

The equatorial tropics weren’t nearly as hot as I’d been led to believe, and certainly no hotter than what I’m used to back home Stateside. In fact, between the humidity and bonafide sunshine (the sun?? what is that?!), I felt more at home than I have since moving to Japan (weather-wise). I wasn’t sure what to expect from Singapore, but even on this first short trip I was impressed. I watched the sunset as it was probably rising on most of you yesterday from the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia. A group of locals sat around on nearby rocks chattering in Chinese and a group of Indian guys strolled up and down the small island while families teetered across the rope bridge leading to the island. Women in saris and Muslim women with their faces mostly covered all gathered around this one point like a goodbye party. Chris had already sailed out somewhere in the South China Sea and the day and my trip were quickly coming to an end.

I love the blue dress you wore in one of your pictures! Super jealous of all the fun travels you have done this year 🙂

I really like the blue dress, it looks a bit like the one Luke (your mom) got me for our anniversary. Mine only goes over one shoulder. Also it's nice to know that living in Houston is good for preparing to travel to the most southeastern point of Asia!
