Good heavens, I started this post in February. We’ve really been on the go. We found out in January that there was a good chance we’d be heading to Japan in the summer. That didn’t pan out; we’re (probably) leaving in November to arrive in Japan in December. But with the specter of moving early on the horizon, we cut a couple days off our February trip to Garmisch in order to swing through Liechtenstein and Switzerland on the route home. That had us driving straight through Alsace, the border region between Germany, France and Switzerland culturally overlap, which is where my dad’s dad’s side of the family is from. Anytime we’re in this general area I’m like, yeah, I look like I could be related to these people.
To break up the drive from Switzerland to Belgium, we stopped at the point where Germany, Switzerland and France meet, then continued on to Colmar in Alsace for lunch. I had heard it was so cute. It IS so cute. Tres tres mignon!
We only had a couple hours before we needed to be back on the road, and Chris was grouchy about parking and about Russian invading Ukraine, then a vendor in the market snapped at him for accidentally skipping the line (which started way off in a corner and was not obvious). But anyway, we managed to get some sandwiches, some Alsatian wine, some delightful regional tea cookies, a hot cup of tea, and explore the market and river before hitting the road again.
Colmar is the hometown of the guy who sculpted the Statue of Liberty. There’s a replica somewhere but we couldn’t find it. It was a really beautiful day for late February!
