The chat with the doctor at Sacred Heart’s children’s cardiology unit keeps playing through my head on repeat. Irregular aorta…potential high blood pressure to his brain…possibly stressing his kidneys…see this in infants who’ll need surgery before three weeks old to live…strongly recommend a CAT scan before Christmas…blowing, warm, misty rain outside the huge window along the whole wall of this tiny hospital room…Captain Goodbaby throwing up after the hour-long screamfest that was the heart ultrasound…his happy chatter as he sucks a tootsieroll pop and points out the window across the courtyard to the building where we’ll do his CAT scan Friday morning…ignoring the baby farts floating around the room and asking the doctor for best and worst-case scenarios after the CAT scan.  |

Now I’ll have the Goodbaby in my lap, reading him Jamberry, snuggling his solid baby body in my lap, then realize he’s babbling, reading to me and turning the pages, because I’ve fallen silent, listening again to the cardiologist’s words.
So we’re dealing with that, thankful that Isaac has no idea and is reassured by calm and silly smiles, and thankful that this wasn’t one more thing to deal with last year when he was three weeks old and we were moving and homeless.
This morning he toddles up to me, huge baby grin, something in his chubby baby hands. It’s baby Jesus from his Little People nativity. He puts baby Jesus right on my heart and holds him there, babbling.
“Yeah, baby Jesus is in our hearts,” I say, covering his hand with mine and putting baby Jesus over Isaac’s sacred heart.
“Bababababa,” Isaac says, taking baby Jesus in both hands again and toddling off.
