“I just want to go to Alaska,” Isaac said Monday morning.
“Good! We’re going to Alaska after breakfast!”
He bolted upright in bed. “Today we’re going to Alaska?”
“Yes! This morning!”
“This day we are going to Alaska?”
“Yes!”
Delight.
And now here we are at the last frontier! Astonishingly, kids were great on the flight.
You can tell a little bit about a place by the airplane headed there. The plane to Japan is tidy, compact, silent. Planes in Florida are sunburned and casual. Planes in South America are chatty and mobile. The plane to Alaska was friendly and…wild? Frontier-y. SO Alaska!
People were very complimentary of the kids and very kind. A woman gave Isaac chocolates and offered to get Eloise some milk. Ladies swapped sight-seeing advice. People looked just a little rough-and-tumble. SO Alaska!
Eloise was ticketed in my lap and the seat arrangement showed a stranger occupying the seat between Isaac and me. But at the last minute, the stranger got a window seat that had previously been occupied. She told us this on the plane and said she was glad Eloise got the extra room. There were not many extra seats onboard this seven-hour flight, so that was a real answer to prayer!
“We’re going to ALASKA!” Isaac said over and over and over. And here we are!
