Another tip from the guy who recommended Boldt Castle was to try the floating restaurant in Alexandria Bay, which is a town, not a bay. Unfortunately that restaurant closed two years ago, but we had a great time drinking local beer under huge trees nearby.
Maybe it was because the high season doesn’t start until July, but Alexandria Bay looked like a town that had maybe passed its peak, as my dad said.
Seeing the empty shops crammed with nautical kitsch made me wonder for the first time…is this what my house looks like to other people???? An elderly couple walked by wearing matching sailor caps. IS THIS MY FUTURE?!

This was the same day we took the boat ride with the monks and saw Boldt Castle, and the day before our alpaca arrival.
We had shown up the night before at Fort Drum, got lost looking for the hotel, and then our reservation was wrong. Everyone was tired of driving and hungry.
As we drove up we saw the grill smoking and my mom joked, “Ask them to toss on three more!” Well not only did Fort Drum have a room for us despite our reservation mishap—it also turned out to be free dinner social night. So those burgers on the grill WERE for us. And we ate them at the hotel playground so my kids could play happily. And they served breakfast every morning. And the check out time was 11am—a perfect 20 minutes after Eloise awoke from her killer catch-up, I’ve-been-up-at-5am-for-days nap.
So clearly we liked Fort Drum. And we loved the Thousand Islands!
