Illuminated hymns, illustrated poems, the story of Jesus’ birth from the Gospel of Luke, and the story of Magi from Mathew make up Mary Engelbreit’s “Peace on Earth, A Christmas Collection” book for children. I saw this book on the review list and got excited about Christmas. That was kind of my only reason for choosing it (to be clear: FREE review copy in exchange for this ‘meh’ review).
It’s 40 colorful pages of traditional Christmas cute. The person who should buy this book is someone who already has a bunch of Mary Engelbreit books (or calendars, pillows, cross stitch, whatever). The person who will not be able to stop herself from buying this book is a grannie or auntie who picks it up at a book store, flips through it, faints into a Engelbreit-induced cuteness coma and exclaims, “Oh, Sophia would just LOVE this!” The niece/granddaughter will read it once. Her mom will flip through it a few times. It will be a charming addition to their Christmas decor. It is the definition of a gift book.
This is the book equivalent of chamomile tea. I think, “Ooo, I want some coconut hibiscus/pumpkin spice red/orange blossom tea!” I never think, “Ooo, chamomile!” But when I end up having chamomile I always think, “Hmm, this is pleasant.” = this book.
Joy, Carsen, Jane—this auntie has something else in mind for you this Christmas!
