Where Globe-Trotting meets Beach-Combing

August 23, 2010 Port of Call

Fishy Establishment

Our first animal encounter in Singapore (even before all the monkeys) was with Dr. Fish, or Nibbler Fish. I read about these fish that nibble dead skin off your feet one time and thought that sounded excessively bizarre. So of course when we saw it we stepped right up. Or right down, actually, into the fish tank. At first this crazy German lady was in there hogging all the fish. “You know why they like me? She told passersby who stopped to ogle her swarm. “It’s because I’m diabetic!” She pronounced it “deeeee-a-bettic!” Supposedly they have a chemical in their fishy saliva that balances human pH. I don’t know about that, but after 15 minutes our feet looked fantastic! People on their way to the Night Safari nearby kept asking, “Does it hurt?” (no.) “Does it tickle?” (YES!) It’s very weird and a little gross if you think about it too much. Once the enthusiastic German exited the tub all the fish zoomed over to Chris and me. They liked my feet a lot better than Chris’ big boy feet. Maybe they were chomping off all those awa odori callouses…I’m not sure. What I do know is that for days our feet felt so soft and smooth Chris told me to please find some Dr. Fish in Japan! I found a spa and Dr. Fish joint, Chris! Come home and we’ll go!!
