I hate that dumb quote about enjoying the journey over the destination. Huh? However, I think that would be specifically applicable here on Lantau Island (烂头), Hong Kong’s biggest outlying island floating serenely in the mouth of the Pearl River. The 5.7-kilometer Ngong Ping Cable Car lifted Chris and me up and over the river, along the airport and over the mountains to the Tian Tan Buddha monastery for a vegetarian lunch and a mini-hike up to see the big bronze Buddha. 
We’ll see more big bronze Buddha later; this is just a late-night Hong Kong intro. Drifting mistily or smog-ily along in the cable car was in itself one of the coolest things we did in Hong Kong. Watching local villagers forage for clams or something a few hundred feet below? Bonus!
